If you need to control your server, but can’t actually be at its keyboard, RealVNC is lean, mean and … FREE! See the picture I’ve taken, but don’t mind the mess. You can see the real server to the right, and it’s screen in a window on my workstation to the left.
Yep it’s a must-have. Besides RealVNC you can also get TightVNC for free. Haven’t exactly found out if and/or why one is better than the other….
My server sits in the guestroom here, and I manage it on a daily basis running Xvnc on the server, and connect to it using TightVNC Viewer.
If you want to make it really secure, make sure the Xvnc only allows localhost to connect and connect your client via SSH and you close port 5900. I use puTTy for that. Google will lead you to instructions on how to set up SSh for VNC.
Indeed Reg, what a mess! g*g*g*g
