My father recently switched from having a Nokia cellphone to a Sony-Ericsson. I’m thinking of buying a new phone myself, since my current Nokia (6310i) does not reliably communicate with my (Nokia) blue-tooth carkit. I get a reliable connection about 40-50% of the time. Unacceptable. Nokia phones are not cheap, certainly not when you compare them to similar phones like Sony-Ericsson. Nokia offers less for more money, and we customers like it the other way around.
So I took my fathers phone (a W810i) and walked to my car. I put the key in the ignition and turned the car “on”. In the phones menu I enabled blue-tooth and looked for available devices. It found the Nokia carkit without any trouble and after supplying the connection-code (just 0000) I made a call over the Nokia carkit. Excellent. Next phone: no more Nokia.
Netbeans 5.5 has reached General Availability. No more beta or release-candidate, but the real thing. And to further emphasize the release, the Netbeans site has been redesigned as well. Easier for the eye, but a slicker interface.
The Visual Web Pack (that was ported from Studio Creator) has been released as well, albeit in a Technology Preview state. Try at your own risk, so to speak.
Firefox 2.0 is a fact. Get it here. It’s not on the official frontpage yet.
Update (24-10-2006 23:34): Firefox 2 is on Mozilla’s frontpage too now.
Because I saw a lot of references to Firefox 2.0 lately, I decided to check it out. The current state is that Mozilla release RC3 of version 2.0, so a production version is around the corner.
I installed RC3, and one of the most notable things was the speed the pages are displayed. It’s a lot faster than 1.5.0.7 I had. Most plug-ins I use still work. A very welcome change is the close-button on every tab, like Opera has. It’s a shame it still does not have mouse-gestures.
I have to check whether this version works with JInitiator (Oracle Forms Java applet), since the only way to get that beast to work with 1.5.0.6 and 1.5.0.7 is to disable Java. Duh?
You watch commercials, right? And you skim through the occassional glossy, right? Did you ever wonder why every single girl looks stunning? No imperfection, no character in their expression, nothing to comment on? Except perhaps the lightning crew could have done a better job?
Have a look at this movie (by Dove) and see how girls get to be so pretty.
Netbeans 5.5 is upgraded to RC2. You know the drill: go here or download immediately.
Yesterday I installed forum software. Because I use WordPress for my weblog and like that very much, I decided to give bbPress a try. Very simple install, very clean layout, but…a little too immature. So I installed the good-old phpBB instead. A very simple install too, a rename of two folders, a change of a couple of settings and you’re good to go. Not sure how phpBB integrates with WordPress. There are hacks out there, but I’d rather have a proper plugin.
phpBB is supposed to work with an Oracle database, but my webserver runs MySQL at the moment, so I used that.
OpenOffice.org released versie 2.0.4 today in their tradition to release on Friday the 13th. And what more: it’s their 6th anniversary. Congratulations OpenOffice.org!
There is a lot of stir-up about Google’s CodeSearch. There is code to be found that’s better not found or used at all. One example being a WinZip keygenerator. I’m not going to include the search as a link (you people are smart enough) for obvious reasons. But the code found actually does compile into a working generator.
I tested it in a fresh Windows XP installation (in VMWare) that did not have WinZIP yet. I installed it, ran the new program and pasted the generated registration information into WinZIP. Voila: a registered version.
Mind you: I legally own all software mentioned in this post. I only ran this exercise because I was curious to see whether it actually worked. It did. I deleted the registered version of WinZIP afterwards.
I just bought a Tokina AT-X Pro 12-24 f/4.0 lens for my Canon 350D. In Belgium, because none of the shops in The Netherlands had the lens on stock. I’ve played with it a little and it seems like a promising lens. I’ll post some results in my gallery soon.
