Pidgin 2.0.0 has been released (no more beta). Pidgin is the new name for Gaim. Of course, Pidgin is not in the Ubuntu repositories yet, but it’s not difficult to get it working. I’m on Feisty, did a “.configure” as per the installation instructions, and had to retry that a couple of times, in the meantime installing the missing devel-versions of some libraries it complains about. After the configure process is satisfied, don’t “make” yet. Do a “apt-get install libgnutls12” (that’s twelve at the end) because that’s needed for MSN-connections. Do a “.configure” once more. After that a “make” and “make install” should work without a glitch.
Above was done on Feisty, but I guess Edgy will work too.
