When reading this I was wondering whether I was reading a weblog written by a grown-up. Who in the right mind cares whether Mr Burleson gets a high Google rank just by telling non-sense. Hey, most of the high-ranked websites are just that. Or is it that his Google rank is higher than yours? So? Ask yourself: what does a high Google rank mean? Does it mean he is smarter? No, it means he will get more hits. By who? Ever wondered who would click these links?

Right. I wouldn’t. Mr Burleson’s website or any comment he makes is just plain air to me. But of course I’m only an Oracle professional (started with Oracle 4 on 5 1/4″ floppy-disks on an AT286, now tell me again what version did you start with?) and I know that Mr Burleson is somebody to not listen to.

No real Oracle professional would listen to Mr Burleson or take what he says for granted (pun intended). Just the kids that are looking for The Oracle and got lost clicking on Mr Burlesons links. We all know that. Now how come you still make a fuss about it? Doug? You’d better keep to your promise: I expect some real technical stuff from you this weekend, so get your *ss (you seem to like words with stars in it) in gear!

  1. Well I just stumbled across this an incoming link on statcounter. I would have replied sooner if you’d mentioned it to me.

    >> Or is it that his Google rank is higher than yours?

No, really, it isn’t. I can only tell you the truth and you can choose to believe it or not.

    >> Ever wondered who would click these links?

You suggest that people don’t click on those links, but they do. I started at a new site 3 or 4 months ago. The one Oracle site that everyone knew was Don’s because that’s the site they see most often when they use Google. So those links are being clicked by Oracle professionals who perhaps don’t work in the same way that you do, but they exist.

    >> (started with Oracle 4 on 5 1/4″ floppy-disks on an AT286, now tell me again what version did you start with?) and I know that Mr Burleson is somebody to not listen to.

Sigh. Whose ego is showing through now? For what it’s worth, the first version I used was 6 on Unix, with a bit of 5 on DOS. So what?

    >> No real Oracle professional would listen to Mr Burleson or take what he says for granted (pun intended).

Well I don’t, personally, but lots of the people I work beside do and not at just one site, so I think your definition of real Oracle professional is pretty narrow, but I’m sure you’re delighted with yourself to be included.

    >> Now how come you still make a fuss about it? Doug?

Because he attacks my friends and threatened me with legal action over a mild comment. When he’s done that to you, then I might care about your opinion. I might even care about your opinion if you had the grace to talk about all of the arguments in the blog and not just google rankings.

    >> I expect some real technical stuff from you this weekend, so get your *ss (you seem to like words with stars in it) in gear!

And I expect some considered debate from you, or at least that you read the blog properly for my reasons for writing it, rather than just picking out something about Google rankings that obviously interested you.

    But I won’t hold my br*ath.

  2. Hi Doug,

Agree, bragging about Oracle 4 was a bit of a low blow. Most excellent Oracle people I know, far better than me, haven’t even worked with Oracle 6 and started with 7. Which is of course a very good start!

I stick to my original thought: some people are best left alone. Mr. Burleson is one of them, even when he’s threatening with legal action. I know, I don’t live in the States so I’m not too familiar with the “I’ll sue you” culture, but you got to agree with me that one has to have a reasonable ground to sue you. And if all there is is a mild comment, who cares? So he’s offended. You seem like an intelligent person (otherwise I would not even follow your blog 😀 ) so I guess you have the ability to distinguish real between fake. Mr. Burleson will do anything to draw attention. Negative publicity is publicity too. We see it in the media all the time. Please don’t follow up on it, since it will give you negative publicity as well. It will discredit you, and get you in the same spot Mr. Burleson is in now. I would hate to see that happen. Since you actually know stuff and write about it.

    Cheers!
    Reginald

  3. Reginald,

I can see a lot of sense in your comments, which seem more balanced than the original blog, even if we have different views. I have often debated with myself and others whether it’s better to ignore or argue back.

Sometimes I think it is best to ignore Don and perhaps I shouldn’t let myself be dragged into it. So, I’ve said what I had to say on the matter and it’s probably best if I say no more, for several reasons, including some of those you’ve highlighted here.

    Peace,

    Doug
