Ubuntu 12.04 has the default firewall ufw enabled, but I rather use iptables. And everytime I reboot the system, I run a script to enable the firewall rules again. But I just found out I don’t need to, there’s a tool for that. Of course.

sudo apt-get install iptables-persistent

That asks you to save the current IPv4 and IPv6 rules and creates a service that is started at boot time so it reads the created files.

Voila.

Another year gone, the new year has started. For me 2012 wasn’t the best year, so I’m making some changes. Some already in effect, some changes still to come. Change is good!

All in all I think I want to be happy, so that’s what I will be.

PS Yes, new WordPress, and since change is good, I changed the theme here…

Wow! Mozilla decided that it will stop all x64 nightly builds of Firefox, as per this discussion. Mainly because of the unstability and the lack of x64 compatible add-ons. What a lame excuse. Get your act together and switch all your resources to x64 builds. WTF?! You can’t buy 32-bits computers for a couple of years now. Basically they are saying: we are giving you a free modern browser, but we develop it on 10 year old hardware???????

Mozilla sucks.

One would think that tomorrow is the first of April. But no. Mozilla really sucks.

Things are returning to normal mode again. Finished fixing up the old house (the inspector was very picky about plugs and dirt) and slowly getting this house back to a state where it is without stuff in boxes. The living room is almost box free (just 2), the kitchen has its amount reduced from around 20 to under 10, just one in the dressing room. Most boxes are up here, in the computer department….of course.

I like being back in Rotterdam. And I like this house.

I’ve moved and internet is alive again. Another IP address, so I updated my DNS records. The server should be reachable soon as the DNS-update propagates.

Tomorrow is the big day. I will be moving back to Rotterdam, in fact to my “old” house. Here the house is filled with boxes and the cats seem to know something is going on. They like the boxes though!

My muscles ache, but I’ll have to hold on for one more day. One more day of packing, moving stuff around, throwing old stuff away. One more day. Pfffff…..

Last week my PC died. I was working in Windows, went to the living room for some coffee or something else, and when I came back there was an error on the screen telling me that Windows couldn’t not find this and that volume (the D: drive). Not sure why this was, I restarted Windows only to find that it would not boot without checking the faulty volume.

But it took ages to get even some progress, so I restarted again. Same story. I thought: let’s really powerdown by flipping the switch on the backside of the PC. So I did. Flipping it on again blew out the power in the whole room. And the bedroom. A fuse blew! Restoring the power brought everything back to live, except my PC. Dead as a doornail.

Earlier I bought a new powersupply, to no rescure: more was broken. Yesterday I bought a new motherboard, an Intel Core i5-3570 CPU and 16GB of memory to go with that. I installed the whole shebang, only to find that Windows does not like major changes. Windows is autistic. I tried the repair option by booting from the Windows DVD, but that did not help a bit.

So I reinstalling my system now. Great. No dataloss I guess, the data is not on the Windows disk.

I created an AVD of Android version 4.1 with the Google APIs. I wanted to emulate my Galaxy Nexus, so I gave it the proper memory and resolution. Upon starting the AVD, this error comes up:

Failed to allocate memory: 8

Turns out I cannot use the Nexus screen resolution, and need to switch to a lower resolution to be able to start the AVD. Not sure why, but I thought you might want to know about this workaround.
