Very nice. Dell listens to people. As per popular request, Dell now ships Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) on a laptop and two desktop systems. Read the announcement here. Or here on Dell‘s own website.
Congratulations, Dell. And thank you.
Not exactly what you call a scoop-posting, but today I discovered Last.fm. Great. Even better than an MP3-player: no matter how big the storage, I always want to listen to something not on it. Now I can just skip to another channel. Fabulous. Anybody has headphone recommendations? It should fit in a laptop-backpack.
Here’s my page.
Yesterday my Linksys WRT54G just died, leaving the server unconnected. I just installed a WRT54GL (mind the L) as a replacement, so things should be fine now. Let me know if you find any quirks.
Last Friday the final work was done in the kitchen. So we thought beforehand. We are still missing several wall-sockets, but the best part: no hood. The company delivered a hood, but when the guys wanted to install it, they noticed it was the wrong type. We ordered a recirculation-type, but this one does not have any holes to recirculate the air since it expects the air to be blown into some pipes that transport the air outside. So for the moment we need to open a window when we are cooking, until they install the new hood. Fortunately we did not have the kitchen installed in wintertime!
Apart from the above, we are very happy with the kitchen. It’s big, but very comfortable and it really feels like “our” kitchen. I will update this post when I have uploaded new pictures to the gallery.
I noticed that for some time now I can’t comment on postings on Oracle weblogs. It doesn’t matter where (at home, at work, at the clients PC) I try to comment, or what browser I use. I can get to the comment screen, enter a comment, and when clicking on “save” (or something to post the comment) I get a 403-error and after that can’t get to the weblog at all.
So, I’ll put my comment to Shay’s question here. Shay: you can do it like this, or like this. Simple.
Oracle mustn’t like comments. And judging by Shay’s question, they don’t know the competition. Both are bad.
We have sold our “old” kitchen and the new kitchen is being build. You can follow the progress on this gallery. The work consists of three stages or parts, whatever you like to call it. The long side of the kitchen, the island, and the removal of the marks the old kitchen left. Part one is half done now, as you can see. It still lacks the ovens, the dishwasher and the sink. The wooden frame around the left side will be painted. Shiny, probably Chinese Red, or something along that line.
In case you are interested, the kitchen is made by the Italian design brand Schiffini. We have the Cinqueterre type, the standard aluminum version (since this year they also have a black-coated aluminum version).
IMVU created a Instant Messenger with 3D avatars that can really interact. A sort of “Second Life” but meant to chat.
The avatars look a bit like game-characters, and can be styled anyway you want. Of course, nothing in life is free. You get an introduction credit of 1000 points. You can earn credits in IMVU, but you can also buy them. And with the credits, you can pimp your avatar. Kewl.
I registered as SwitchBL8, just to see what’s there. I’ll keep you informed.
Some companies call it “early access”, others “pre-release”, or even “milestones”, but Oracle likes to call it Technology Preview. Not a beta yet, but very usable.
Oracle released JDeveloper 11g – Technology Preview. So it’s not the real thing yet.
It’s JEE 5 compatible, has a ton of new features, and is also faster to boot.
Personally I don’t like what they did to the property inspector, or the introduction of harmonicas in toolbars for that matter. Apart from some fancy try-outs, the GUI did not change.
The rest of it I still got to try. There is still on visual aid when designing Swing like the Matisse designer has.
I just found my Wacom tablet in one of the boxes. To my surprise, connecting it to Ubuntu made it work immediately. I did not need to install ANY driver, it just works. The pen and the mouse. When will Ubuntu cease to surprise me? It is starting to embarrass me how people (just like me) still struggle with Windows and all its quirks whereas Ubuntu (not sure about other Linux distro’s) just works. Amazing.
Pidgin 2.0.0 has been released (no more beta). Pidgin is the new name for Gaim. Of course, Pidgin is not in the Ubuntu repositories yet, but it’s not difficult to get it working. I’m on Feisty, did a “.configure” as per the installation instructions, and had to retry that a couple of times, in the meantime installing the missing devel-versions of some libraries it complains about. After the configure process is satisfied, don’t “make” yet. Do a “apt-get install libgnutls12” (that’s twelve at the end) because that’s needed for MSN-connections. Do a “.configure” once more. After that a “make” and “make install” should work without a glitch.
Above was done on Feisty, but I guess Edgy will work too.
