Gallery seems to be in working order again. I made an MySQL export in Windows before I took the plunge and installed Ubuntu. After importing the whole Gallery-database, the application did not recognize the data and said that it was not installed, or it just gave a big fat error. So I dropped the database, created the database with the installer from Gallery (empty) and though: now let’s import the data. And after numerous “table not found” errors in MySQL I saw what had happened. Windows does not care about case in filenames. So creating a database-table in MySQL results in a file in small-characters. When running Linux (or some other case-sensitive OS) size matters. So I dropped the empty database, imported my backup, and manually renamed the tables to proper casing. Pffew…that worked. I only had to recreate all thumbnails, and that was it.

After lots of attempt to bring life to my Windows installation, and having problems with a new Windows-installation on a seperate disk (Apache kept crashing without any specific reason), I finally switched back to Linux again. The “temporary” Windows solution lasted already about 6 years, so it was about time. The server is now Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft). The domains (dns) work, the mailserver works, my weblog is getting back up.
Gallery is giving some problems as well, I’m not sure why.

So, stay tuned, and everything will be back to normal in the next couple of days.

Oh, and a belated Happy Holidays!

Tomorrow, or Monday, I will be conducting some server maintenance. A new 250GB disc will be installed to give the website, especially the gallery, more room to breathe.

Today I bought the Sony Ericsson W850i. What a change from my Nokia 6230i. It’s small, it looks snazzy, and it is very easy to use. The device is a phone, a camera, an mp3 player, a radio, a videocamera and a portable game-console all in one!

It’s been quiet here. That’s because I was on holiday in Thailand. And I’m now struggling with 3200+ pictures and over 4 hours of DV-movie. Thailand is great. The food is very spicy and divers. The people are really friendly (they don’t act like they are), and the weather is very good (but gives you sunburn easily). The only terrible thing about Thailand is the traffic. Don’t go driving there by yourself if you don’t have nerves of steel. The number of near-accidents you see in 1 (one) hour is more than you will ever see in a year when you are back home!

When I have some pictures to show, I’ll point you to the gallery.

My father recently switched from having a Nokia cellphone to a Sony-Ericsson. I’m thinking of buying a new phone myself, since my current Nokia (6310i) does not reliably communicate with my (Nokia) blue-tooth carkit. I get a reliable connection about 40-50% of the time. Unacceptable. Nokia phones are not cheap, certainly not when you compare them to similar phones like Sony-Ericsson. Nokia offers less for more money, and we customers like it the other way around.
So I took my fathers phone (a W810i) and walked to my car. I put the key in the ignition and turned the car “on”. In the phones menu I enabled blue-tooth and looked for available devices. It found the Nokia carkit without any trouble and after supplying the connection-code (just 0000) I made a call over the Nokia carkit. Excellent. Next phone: no more Nokia.

Netbeans 5.5 has reached General Availability. No more beta or release-candidate, but the real thing. And to further emphasize the release, the Netbeans site has been redesigned as well. Easier for the eye, but a slicker interface.
The Visual Web Pack (that was ported from Studio Creator) has been released as well, albeit in a Technology Preview state. Try at your own risk, so to speak.

Firefox 2.0 is a fact. Get it here. It’s not on the official frontpage yet.

Update (24-10-2006 23:34): Firefox 2 is on Mozilla’s frontpage too now.

Because I saw a lot of references to Firefox 2.0 lately, I decided to check it out. The current state is that Mozilla release RC3 of version 2.0, so a production version is around the corner.
I installed RC3, and one of the most notable things was the speed the pages are displayed. It’s a lot faster than 1.5.0.7 I had. Most plug-ins I use still work. A very welcome change is the close-button on every tab, like Opera has. It’s a shame it still does not have mouse-gestures.
I have to check whether this version works with JInitiator (Oracle Forms Java applet), since the only way to get that beast to work with 1.5.0.6 and 1.5.0.7 is to disable Java. Duh?
